On Butterflies of Wisdom today, Best-Selling Author, Win C welcomes Helya Mohammadian. Helya was born in Iran in 1982 and moved to the United States when she was three years old just after the revolution. Helya’s parents envisioned a better life for Helya and her siblings, so they packed their bags (and whole life) and moved across the ocean. Despite being the only Middle Eastern family living in a small Southern town in Louisiana, Helya’s childhood was pretty normal. Helya knew at a very early age that she wanted to be a fashion designer and from watching movies set in New York City, that that’s where she wanted to live. Though it wasn’t easy, Helya made that dream come true when she moved to New York City 15 years ago. Before Slick Chicks even existed, Helya had a string of jobs in fashion just trying to find where she fit in. Helya was an Assistant Personal Shopper at Bergdorf Goodman; working with famous celebrities, well-known socialites and the “who’s who” of New York’s Upper East Side. Helya worked really hard and did everything she could to get ahead, but there was always an empty feeling inside. Helya felt extremely unfilled, but in the end it was a blessing in disguise because it led her to create her company. After what felt like the millionth time Helya used a restroom stall as a changing room, she knew it was time to change underwear for the better. Feeling fresh and confident wasn’t something Helya was willing to compromise on anymore. When she first launched Slick Chicks Helya didn't realize that this product would be impactful or change someone's life. Helya originally thought of the concept out of pure necessity when she found herself wanting a quick change and a fresh pair of undies after an intense sweat session --we've all been there. It wasn't until Helya started receiving messages from women, who were wheelchair users, thanking her for making their life a little easier that Helya realized so many women need these underwear. With the easy to remove side fasteners women can change their underwear on the go, in a not so discreet area, or simply because it’s convenient and makes life a little easier. Helya want to empower all women and help them regain their dignity and confidence. What’s crazy is that over 53 million women live with a permanent disability in America alone, which is something fashion cannot ignore any longer. And though Helya is able bodied herself, she don’t think it is right that just because someone has a disability that they don’t care about fashion or how it makes them feel inside and out. There is a way to bridge the gap between fashion and function and Helya is excited to innovate a product that most of us take for granted every day.
